Description

The ‘Pietro Acclavio’ Civic Library is Taranto’s main public library and houses a collection of around 150,000 items. Its roots date back to the 18th century, but the turning point came in 1891, when the scholar Pietro Acclavio bequeathed his extensive collection of books to the city: a donation so significant that it marked a genuine rebirth of the library, which has borne his name ever since. Its most precious treasure is the ‘Rari’ Section, which houses 33 manuscripts devoted to local history and the history of Taranto, 4 incunabula and around 300 sixteenth-century books, alongside valuable editions from the 16th to the 18th centuries. As well as preserving these collections, the library is now a vibrant cultural hub, with reading and reference rooms and numerous initiatives open to the city.
